Looking to fill up on plant-based delights? Check out our guide to vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Hong Kong.
If you’re leaning towards eating less meat, or considering what it means to be vegetarian or vegan in Hong Kong, it’s worth knowing that this shift could be the single biggest way individuals can reduce their impact on the planet. Each day, a person who eats a vegan diet “saves 1,100 gallons of water, 45 pounds of grain, 30 square-foot of forested land, 20-pounds CO2 equivalent and one animal’s life”. And the cherry on the (plant-based) cake is that you don’t have to compromise on taste to align with your values. From traditional dim sum to comfort eats and insta-friendly cafe bites, these miss-meat-not vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Hong Kong prove you can go plant-based without sacrificing on flavour…

Lock Cha Tea House
Dim sum is a Hong Kong staple, and thanks to Lock Cha Tea House, vegans and vegetarians don’t have to miss out. Lock Cha offers a variety of friendly twists on this Chinese tradition, from pickled bean curd skin to vegan siu mai and plenty of veggies. The only requirement is that all diners order a pot of their own individual tea — which is easy, because the tea menu is triple the length of the food menu. The helpful staff will then show you how to best brew your particular pot. The original location, set in the beautiful grounds of Hong Kong Park (found on your right just after the fountain), is a great pick for any visiting guests!

Big Dill (CLOSED)
Editor’s Note: Big Dill has closed as of October 2022.
With a mission to make vegan mainstream, Big Dill blurs the line between plant-based and traditional comfort food. Think juicy burgers, gyros and more. The chefs here make all of the meat-free “chicken”, “beef” and “lamb” in house from scratch, using real ingredients to make sure it’s packed with protein. We think this description sums it up: “it’s epic food, that happens to be vegan”.
Sassy Tip: Big Dill is located within the bar Espresso Martini, directly opposite Potato Head.

Happy Veggies
Whether you’re vegan or not, this restaurant is worth checking out. As a non-profit social enterprise, Happy Veggies actively recruits staff who have hearing impairments, striving to provide equal job opportunities in Hong Kong. The restaurant is run in a similar style to a canteen, where you can select two dishes plus rice, soup and a dessert. Though 90% of the dishes are vegan, you may have to double check some dishes don’t have egg. The lunch is particularly well-priced and absolutely delicious.
Bonus Points: As if being a social enterprise isn’t enough, the meat-free dishes have less salt, less sugar, less oil and no MSG.
Happy Veggies, Yuen Yuen Institute, Sam Dip Tam, Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong, 2490 9882
LN Fortunate Coffee
With its Instagrammable interior and friendly staff, LN Fortunate Coffee offers an entirely vegan udon menu. Think huge, steaming portions of dumplings, plant-based meatballs and mushroom varieties. Rest assured it’s wallet-friendly, with plenty of options under $100. It also serves pasta, burgers, hotdogs and baked potatoes. The best bit? This spot is never short on desserts. The waffles and fresh fruit tarts are two we’d recommend.

Restaurants With Vegetarian Or Vegan Menus
Plant-based dining in Hong Kong has come a long way in the past few years, with many of the city’s top restaurants offering vegetarian or vegan menus in addition to their normal offerings. Here are a few of our favourites worth checking out:
Qi: House Of Sichuan: With an entire Impossible menu and plenty of veggie options, this Michelin-starred spicy spot has something to please everyone.
Beef & Liberty: Despite the name, this burger joint has great vegan options via it’s plant-based sister brand, Leaves & Liberty. Swap any of the burgers for the Impossible burger, a vegan bun and vegan cheese, as well as tucking into veggie starters, salads and more.
Madame Fù: From its beautiful pink-themed interiors to the balcony seating and free-flow dim sum feasts, there’s a lot to love about Madame Fù. And to top it off, there’s a dedicated veggie menu to boot!
Classified: Your friendly neighbourhood cafe has joined the plant-based revolution with aplomb. In addition to its regular offering, Classified has a separate vegetarian menu with dishes like OmniPork Quesadilla, Beyond Sausage Pizzette, Nachos and more.
The Drunken Pot: With its base of meaty broths, hotpot may not typically be your cuisine of choice if you’re trying to eat veggie. However, at The Drunken Pot, plant-based options like rich mushroom and truffle may just prove to be a game-changer. Load up on homemade bean curd rolls, veggie dumplings and tofu for the full experience.
Mak Mak: Mak Mak’s vegetarian offering is loaded with fresh flavours galore. Enjoy all your traditional Thai favourites, from Pad Thai to Tom Yum and Laab, without any of the meat-induced guilt!
181 at Fortnum & Mason: Indulge in a taste of England here at 181. We’re highlighting this one particularly for its vegetarian afternoon tea set, which includes finger sandwiches, scones and cakes.
